BALTIMORE, MD, April 7, 2025 – INFORMS, the world’s largest association for professionals and students in operations research (O.R.), AI, analytics and data science, announced it has awarded USA Cycling its 2025 Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Advanced Analytics, Operations Research and Management Science, for its use of operations research (O.R.) and analytics in elite sports performance. With Project 4:05, USA Cycling transformed race strategy and athlete preparation, enabling the Women’s Team Pursuit to win gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Every day 17 people die waiting for a kidney transplant. New research in the INFORMS journal Management Science tackles the transportation part of this problem.

Airport security COVID-19 recommendations miss the mark as variant surges: Sheldon H. Jacobson

URBANA, Illinois -- With the COVID-19 delta variant spreading and air travel surging, a perfect public health storm is brewing at airport security checkpoints. Just a few weeks ago, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) assessed whether the U.S. Transportation Security Administration was taking the necessary actions to reduce the spread of infections amongst transportation security officers (TSOs) and air travelers at airport security checkpoints. Given the recent virus transmission risk and uncertainty, their recommendations were woefully inadequate and missed the mark to make substantive changes that could have a lasting impact on public health and the safety of air travelers.
