OR/MS Tomorrow Spotlights

Operations research has had an invaluable impact on how decisions are made in a wide range of real-world applications. With the constantly increasing need to solve complex decision-making problems, the integration of machine learning and classical optimization techniques has become an emerging area of research. In this article, ORMS Tomorrow editor, Justin Dumouchelle, outlines his research on machine-learning augmented methods for nested optimization problems.

FelooPy is a Python software package for user-friendly formulating, coding, solving, analyzing, and benchmarking mathematical, computa tional, or statistical models. It supports interface/solver-neutral coding, promoting shareability and reproducibility across users with varying access to free/proprietary solvers. The models are passed to environments that are searched iteratively, sequentially, or in parallel, all integrated to decide how operations should be performed in real or virtual-world systems, industries, or supply chains. These modular environments enable experts to reuse capabilities instead of starting from scratch for each use case.

Drawing from my experience in both industries, I’ve identified a data-based perspective is essential for executing solutions, gathering the right information, and building impact for products. A music-based perspective, on the other hand, is essential for identifying problems, presenting insight, and building impact for people. This article highlights the three essential “musical” soft skills you need, whether you’re a student just starting out, an entry-level analyst, or a seasoned professional.
