COVID-19 Ad Ban in Germany Led to 6% Reduction in Grocery Sales
News Release

BALTIMORE, MD, August 5, 2024 – In spring 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of Germany’s 16 federal states instituted an ad ban, forcing retailers to stop all print advertising in that state for three weeks. The state did so under the assumption that such a ban would limit contacts during the pandemic. However, banning print advertising is also being discussed as a way to conserve natural resources, including the paper and water required to produce printed advertising materials, and a way to help reduce carbon emissions.

Whose Tariffs Are Worse For The American Consumer?

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump share common ground on tariff policy. While some policymakers argue that tariffs can be a tool to protect and help grow domestic industries and ensure national security, tariffs may also result in unintended economic consequences that cost U.S. consumers billions. Trump's trade war tariffs generated about $233 billion in duties collected by U.S. Customs through March 2024, according to an analysis from the Tax Foundation.
